Mick Fanning has been part of the Creatures family for well over two decades. When he started as a lightning-fast grom with see-through eyebrows it was all about using the pads of the top-level Creatures team at the time. The signature pads of Taj Burrow, Shane Powell, Luke Egan, Luke Hitchings and Jake Paterson all got a run under Mick’s feet.
As Mick’s profile and insight grew, he soon got to develop his own tail pads. Some of the early pads had “bike-ramp-style” kicks, as Mick stated when we sat down to discuss the evolution of his traction pads. They soon evolved more refined templates with a steeper kick to stop his foot slipping back. What soon followed were his staple 3-piece pads, including a wider Eugene pad, and a special two-piece Twin Fin pad.
That relentless evolution and attention to detail inspired other pros like Italo Ferreira to develop their own pads inspired by Mick’s dedication to the evolution of his grip. Italo brought some of his own flair and insight, in fact, Mick loved Italo’s take so much, he’s adopted those improvements and upped the stakes yet again.
